Baseball Team Takes First Two Games

    The Ripley Tiger baseball team has control of its 2009 season with a current record of 2-0.
   On Saturday, February 14, Ripley played their first game with Alcorn Central as their opponent. The game was easily won by Ripley, as the final score of the game was 13-4. The most successful inning was the second inning with five runs. Jase Wilbanks served as the winning pitcher, who also had multiple hits, along with Chase Chapman and Alex Jones. In the game, also, Ripley gained six errors, while Alcorn Central only had two.

Basketball Ends at North Half Competition

       The Ripley Tigers and Lady Tigers competed in the second round of the North Half State Tournament on February 19. The girls played at Houston and the boys played at Corinth.
   The Lady Tigers rallied against the Aberdeen Lady Bulldogs. The first quarter was close, with Ripley scoring 14 points to Aberdeen’s 16. The Lady Tigers fought hard in the second quarter and went into halftime leading 32-28. However, the Lady Bulldogs came out strong second half. They added 24 points to their score in the third quarter, while Ripley added 15. Aberdeen scored 22 points in the fourth quarter to Ripley’s 15, making the final score 74-62, in favor of Aberdeen.  Top scorers for Ripley were Shunquest Howell with 20 points, Meisha Strong with 18, and Becca Ruckes with 13. Steelers Take Super Bowl XLIII

    In what is considered by Steeler fans and commentators “the most exciting Super Bowl ever,” the Arizona Cardinals were about to stamp this game as the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history.  The Cardinals were down at the end of the third quarter by 20-7 . . . 13 points; yet, in the fourth the Cardinals went on to score 16 unanswered points.
   With only 35 seconds left on the clock, Ben Roethlisberger connected with Santonio Holmes on their last play to win Super Bowl XLIII with a score of 27-23. Holmes had only one square yard of end zone to operate in and replays were viewed to confirm the call. 
  As stated to EPSN, Holmes said, “I knew it was a touchdown 100 percent. My feet never left the ground. All I did was stood up on my toes and extended my hands."

Powerlifting Team Claims 2nd in District Meet

       The Ripley High School Powerlifting Team traveled to the District meet at North Pontotoc to take the 2nd place trophy.  Michael McBryde in class 181 and Jaquise Cook in class 132 took 1st place.  Wilson with a class of 198, Cook with a class of 181, and  Alex Jones with a class of 123 all finished in 2nd place.  Jonathan Carter claimed 3rd place in the 275 class.   The Powerlifting Team will be competing at the North Half at Lewisburg High School on March 6.

Phelps Banned from Swimming Competition

Michael Phelps may soon be paying a high price for smoking marijuana. The eight Olympic gold medalist was pictured at a party inhaling from a marijuana pipe and has been banned from the swimming competition for three months and potentially will face criminal charges.
  In May, however, he will be able to defend his seven titles in July at the World Championships. “He will be physically ready,” says Kevin Eason of TimesOnline, “but Phelps should brace himself psychologically, because his session with a bong will not be easily forgotten by millions of Americans seeing again their fallen hero.”
